Overview

Alicia Wilhelmy, aka “Mrs. Mahj,” is a modern mahjong teacher and storyteller rooted in Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky’s growing mahjong community. Recently featured in The Scout Guide Cincinnati/NKY 10th Anniversary Issue, as Mrs. Mahj, Alicia is a blend of wisdom, warmth, and wit, pairing decades of mahjong (and life!) experience with a true enthusiasm for screen-free connection.

Alicia presents as your fabulous friend who has seen everything, knows everyone, and always has the perfect piece of advice, whether about mahjong etiquette, strategy, or navigating life with grace. She brings accessibility to a game often associated with tradition or mystique, turning learning into a luxurious and communal experience.

Committed to making sure we experience life offline, Alicia cultivates connection the old-fashioned way: in small groups, around real tables, with real conversations. Her Instagram is another table — a place where new players are welcomed, returning players feel at home, and the culture and history of mahjong are honored.

Background

As mahjong experiences a cultural resurgence, especially among women seeking offline, tactile hobbies, the community needs teachers who do more than instruct: they need guides who inspire. With mahjong lessons and small-group gatherings expanding quickly in her region, Mrs. Mahj has become that figure. Her recent feature in The Scout Guide Cincinnati/NKY (10th Anniversary Edition) further cements her place as a local tastemaker and trusted voice in the city’s creative culture.

She has also developed “Mahj Solitaire,” which is a way for players to practice independently, build confidence between games, and deepen their intuition for the game.

Opportunity

Instagram is at the heart of the mahjong revival. For Mrs. Mahj, it is the perfect place to:

  • Showcase her teaching style

  • Introduce and expand her Mahj Solitaire practice method

  • Share tips that demystify the game for new or developing players

  • Celebrate mahjong culture, etiquette, and the meaningful offline connections it makes

  • Build a loyal following of students and players who return to her again and again

Business Goals

Primary

  • Position Mrs. Mahj as the trusted, stylish, wise voice in the mahjong community in Cincinnati and nationally, supported by her recent Scout Guide Cincinnati 10th Anniversary feature

  • Grow her audience of students through helpful, shareable content and scheduling lessons and events

  • Build authority by blending teaching, storytelling, and cultural insight

Secondary:

  • Develop potential passive and semi-active income streams such as digital classes, workshops, curated events, partnerships, and branded teaching materials

  • Expand into cross-generational community building (mother/daughter classes, friend groups, clubs, etc.)

Audience

  • Women ages 25–65 who are learning or returning to mahjong (both local and national)

  • New players seeking guidance, etiquette, confidence and structure

  • Social players who love community and ritual, and a break from their phones

  • Followers drawn to humor, sophistication, and a little drama (the fun kind)

  • People who value culture, connection, offline hobbies, and beautiful design

  • Individuals seeking approachable ways to practice (like Mahj Solitaire)

Brand Persona & Tone

Worldly, Wise & a Little Bit Wicked

Think Padma Lakshmi crossed with Diane Keaton meets your favorite mahjong auntie. Mrs. Mahj is elegant but approachable, discerning but warm. She’s a woman who carries a global perspective, impeccable taste, and a playful wink in her back pocket. She teaches the game the way she lives life: with style, intention, and generosity.

  • Worldly: Well-read, well-traveled, and deeply curious. She brings an appreciation for mahjong’s roots and treats the game as both cultural tradition and modern ritual.

  • Wise: Her guidance moves beyond tiles into life lessons, delivered with the kind of thoughtful, patient clarity that comes from experience rather than ego. She knows when to nurture, when to nudge, and when to simply let you play.

  • Witty: Charming, confident, and sharp. She tells the truth with a wink, disarms with humor, and keeps the table laughing, even when the tiles aren’t cooperating.

  • Cultured: Refined without being rigid. She respects mahjong’s history and traditions, values etiquette, and turns every gathering into a celebration. Her taste is impeccable and her joy is infectious.

  • Welcoming: Auntie energy, but elevated. Her standards are high because she cares, and she wants you to succeed. Whether you’re a brand-new player or returning after years away, she makes you feel like you belong.

Creative Considerations & Mandatories

  • Use motifs that nod to mahjong tradition: symbols, suits, ritual objects

  • Favor clean, classic color palettes (creams, jade, red, soft gold)

  • Typography should feel modern but refined

  • Maintain consistency in teaching notes, tips, and table etiquette posts

  • Use reels for teaching moments; use carousels for storytelling

  • Content should always uplift the mahjong community — never gatekeep

  • Lean into “wise woman” persona but keep it playful, not preachy
